Here's another piece of fan art. This is Benjen Stark of Game of Thrones/ Song of Ice and Fire The books are absolutely fantastic and have gotten me interested in Fantasy again. The TV show is great as well.

FANART: Zatoichi

After the conference I've been focusing on getting a solid picture book story together. That leaves me plenty of time to get my draw on. So here's the first piece of a series of fanart pictures. Trying out new ways to finish a drawing quickly. Not quite there yet but I'm happy with this one. (Inspired by Sam Bosma's awesome work)

Me and my brother watched these movies and loved them years ago. I would advise you to check them out for free on HULU. They are formulaic in a good way, giving you plenty of what you love in every movie. (The first bunch are clear of blood and gore although people get killed in droves.)

Poster Vignette & Conference recap

Here's another illustration from the poster I made for Averbode. This time the theme is the advent.

I went to the SCBWI winter conference in NY last weekend and it was awesome. Nice to meet a lot of my peers and some people I've been following on the internet for some time now. I came home with a lot of inspiration and even more business and postcards. My twitter and facebook account are now buzzing with new friends and comments. Not sure if I made an impression with the editors and art directors but time will tell.

This is one vignette of a poster I did for Averbode with all the Christian Holidays. I'm still trying to incorporate analog textures into my stuff.

Now I'm off to NY for the SCBWI conference. Hopefully handing out postcards and business cards to random attendees and shamelessly self-promoting myself (uuuggggghhhh) will get me some new opportunitues. If not, there's always NY pizza!

Postcards and test prints for SCBWI2012

These postcards came out great. Always a little bit of a gamble whether the colors and values will print out nice. They did!

The test prints are just to make sure my monitor calibration is spot on. They also looked good although I lost some contrast in the blacks.

Monster illustration for Portfolio.

I experimented on this one. I used some very textured brushes and I like the analog feel they gave the illustration. To complete my color palette I used a technique detailed in James Gurney's book Color and Light: A guide for the realist painter. Here's the gamut map I used.




All in all a pretty successful experiment.
